Essential Availability
Availability is quite simply the state of your computing infrastructure—hardware,
software, and data—being accessible to you when need it
to perform business functions. In Information Technology, availability
refers specifically to the ability of access your data when you
need it. Different levels of ‘availability’ exist.
For example, an always operating dot-com shop requires high availability:
redundant servers with redundant storage so they can operate 24
hours a day.
But that’s expensive, and most small businesses in the
Plant City and central Florida area don’t require, and can’t
cost justify, high availability solutions; for them, ‘essential
availability’ is a more reasonable solution. The data is
there when you need it, or at least not very far away from recovery
if something does go wrong. The following pages outline some areas
where you can make reasonable investments into greatly increasing
your essential availability.
