Firewall
A closely related, but distinct security product is the firewall.
Available in both hardware and software implementations, firewalls
prevent unauthorized individuals from probing IP “ports”
on your computer. Although marginally useful for people who access
the Internet via phone dial-up accounts, firewalls are especially
important for individuals accessing the Internet via always-on
connections, such as DSL, Cable, or T-1 lines.
Companies using cable or DSL lines for their Internet access will
sometimes have “broadband routers” on their network.
These provide some firewall protection due to the Network Address
Translation they use to provide the network with Internet access.
Some early users of broadband Internet access don’t have
these routers (they weren’t required at the time) and so
are unprotected against port probes without purchasing additional
hardware.
