Backup
Probably the most important tool for reliable availability is
your backup/restore solution. It is, simply, whatever method you
use to make a copy of your data. Popular methods include copying
files to magnetic tapes, floppy disks, Iomega Zip disks, and the
increasingly popular rewrite-able compact disks, or CD-RWs. Any
of these media types may be appropriate depending on your individual
circumstances: each of them have advantages and disadvantages.
If you’re not doing regular backups, you should. It’s
critical. If you are already backing up, that’s a good start;
but have you verified they will have the information you need
when you need it? After a data loss is not the time to find out
your backup isn’t working the way you thought, or expected.
The only way to be certain that your backup system is working
is by performing tests in which you restore data from the backup.
