Antivirus
Computer viruses and worms have entered the common vernacular
in a big way, even making the national evening news and newspaper
headlines. Most computer users know that anti-virus programs are
how to stop computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses and similar
programs. (All types of malicious files often get collectively
referred to as “viruses”.) Viruses are transmitted
by downloaded programs, swapping floppy disks, email attachments,
etc. Some commercially-sold software has even shipped on infected
floppy and compact disks.
The best anti-virus programs detect malicious files using multiple
methods, but the most accurate is looking for specific pieces
of code known to exist within each file. This list of “signatures”
must be updated frequently to keep pace with all the new viruses
being written all the time. If you haven’t updated the virus
signatures in your antivirus program in more than three months,
you’re at risk of infection. If your antivirus program is
using signature files older than a year, it is virtually useless
against the current threats against your data.
